About Us
Sarah, Jeff and their daughter India-Lily bought Thorpe Cottage in Autumn 2006 and set about turning the cottage, which had been rented out to long term tenants for a number of years, into a holiday cottage that they could be proud of.
We named the cottage both after the current name of the road and also after Sarah’s ancestors – the Thorpe’s, who lived locally. (see photo) Jeff is a cockney by birth but feels right at home in North Yorkshire. India likes having not one but two sweet shops to choose from when she visits and highly rates the locally-made Brymor ice-cream – her current favourite is mint choc chip.
Our aim was to create a home from home where guests could arrive and instantly relax with no scary decor, no tired furniture and no unpleasant surprises of any kind!
We sincerely hope guests will enjoy their stay and very much welcome feedback and suggestions.

Great Grandad Craggs
Sarah’s great-grandfather Thomas William Craggs, whose father was Edward Thorpe Craggs, of Fearby.
Thorpe was the maiden name of Edward’s mother Catherine, who was born in Warthermaske, a tiny hamlet next to Swinton (approximately a mile from the cottage).
Thomas William (or Bill as he was known) was photographed enjoying a pint outside the pub in Mickley by photographer Bertram Unné, who recorded the way of life in the Dales and the Yorkshire countryside between 1940 and 1979 and whose work forms part of an online collection of some 10,000 images of life in North Yorkshire in the 19th and 20th centuries.
